Nursing Care: Meet Our Night Nurse, Cathy Opio

Have you met Cathy?

Now that we’ve settled into our new routine here at Priesty Fields, we’re going to be sharing posts to introduce each of our wonderful staff members that help with the day-to-day running of the home.

This week, we’re getting to know Cathy, who provides nursing care here at Priesty Fields:

Nursing Care: Meet Cathy

Cathy, our night nurse here at Priesty Fields, qualified as an RMN – a registered nurse specialising in mental health – in 2011. She’s worked in a variety of different care settings over the years, but her passion lies in working with elderly clients and in palliative care.

She said, “I think the most rewarding aspect of working in nursing care is looking after someone where you can see that they are happy and confident, and trust you. I love putting a smile on our residents’ faces and making them feel important.”

Cathy joined the Priesty Fields team before we officially opened, helping to get the home ready for our first residents moving in. She said, “I am so excited – I’m looking forward to being able to spend time with the residents.”

Nursing care: in-room technology

Nursing Care: Technology in Our Homes

The innovative design of our home aims to help us deliver exceptional person-centred care, with a focus on promoting independence and wellbeing. We’ve also implemented a range of technologies to assist us in achieving that.

Our alarm systems, for example, are silent and alert us to a patient’s needs via a video. This can help us to ascertain what needs to be done without disturbing them, or those around them, unnecessarily.

Cathy said, “Priesty Fields has simplified our workload with the technology systems in place, which I believe will give me more time with the residents. This will enable me to get to know them as individuals.”

Joining the Priesty Fields Team

“I applied to Priesty Fields as I felt like I needed a change – I was looking for a challenge. I’ve also recently moved into the area and was looking for a job where I can fit in and be part of a team, something which I believe Priesty Fields delivers on. The whole team is lovely and I’m enjoying working with everyone.

“I enjoy working at Priesty Fields because it’s a very calm environment and the team is lovely – I’m looking forward to the future.

“Priesty Fields is unique because it’s a new home, with a new team, and new equipment. I would describe it as fabulous! Everyone feels valued and part of the team.

“My favourite aspect of my role is that I have the opportunity to work to my full capacity and capability – and I have a big support team around me to help.”

The Wellbeing of Our Staff

We place a large focus on the wellbeing of our staff; it’s as much their home as anyone else’s. We want them to feel comfortable and at ease in the home, and able to make changes, whilst also having their own areas for resting and recuperating after a busy shift.

This helps them to feel happy and relaxed in their role, creating a positive environment for all our teams and residents.

In Cathy’s spare time, she likes to relax by watching television and listening to music, and she also enjoys spending time with her children.
